Blushing January

Tis the last day in January!
Hurray!  Although it's snowing outside as I'm writing this, the "S" word comes to mind...a blushing Coat, styled two ways, to put you in the "S" mood too!
Enjoy the weekend! x

Saturday afternoon bliss: Cookham, Thames Valley

We found ourselves in Cookham last Saturday, after taking our nieces to watch a pantomime in Henley. The reason? The young ladies asked to have lunch in that place "where we went last time"! Repeat customers under the age of ten is a rather positive sign for an easy-going environment and good food, wouldn't you agree?
The King's Arms in Cookham is a crooked old building in the small high street. There is a car park at the back but you have to drive in-between the old buildings to get to it, so slow your roll.
In the evenings the high street is lit with overlapping strings of whimsical lights that make the little village super cute and romantic. On rainy, grey days it feels a bit melancholic, but that's the charm of the English countryside, don't you think? Then you get to appreciate the fireplace and a warm drink even more.

The pub has been refurbished, although the old part is still very much a wood-panelled, open-fire den, great for a quite drink. The restaurant is rustic and a bit more contemporary but still set up around a second fireplace. We sat right next to it off course, because we were cold.
The girls ordered their own food and the waiters have always been friendly and patient, dealing with the little ones.
What did we eat? Pork Belly, scallops and gravy, what else?

Cookham is right on the edge of river Thames and every time we cross over the narrow bridge, we tend to drive purposely slow to take in the view.
It's a beautiful spot, where the river splits in two and creates little islands in the middle, covered in old, dense trees. You can walk to Cliveden House from here, or just enjoy a good pub meal and a short walk around the village.

See you around? x
